South Korea: Man arrested for opening emergency exit door during flight

A man who opened the emergency exit door on a flight in South Korea was arrested on Sunday. He could be imprisoned for up to 10 years for violating the Aviation Security Act. The officers provided this information. According to police officials, the incident took place on Friday. During preliminary interrogation, the 33-year-old man told the investigating officers that he felt suffocation and tried to get off the plane hurriedly. Twelve people were slightly injured after an Asiana Airlines Airbus flight A321-200 door opened.

When the door was opened, a strong gust of wind came inside the cabin. The incident spread panic among the passengers. Those taken to hospitals were mainly treated for minor problems such as difficulty in breathing. Some passengers have complained that they experienced severe ear pain. Some passengers were seen screaming and crying in a video shared on social media. Normally, emergency exit doors cannot be opened in mid-flight due to the difference in air pressure inside and outside the aircraft.

According to Asiana Airlines officials, the man was probably able to open the door because the plane was flying at a low altitude while preparing to land and there was not much difference in pressure. The Ministry of Transport said the plane was at an altitude of 700 feet when the man opened the door. The plane was on a flight from the southern island of Jeju to Daegu. There were 200 people on board the plane at the time of the incident.
