juba (Best Hindu News): South Sudan has appealed for more humanitarian aid from international donors. He has been struggling to deal with refugees pouring into the country from neighboring Sudan.
Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management Minister Albino Akol Attack said on Thursday that the $5.3 million budget released by the cabinet to deal with the influx of people along the border with Sudan is not enough.
“The government and partners have invested money, but there are still a large number of people coming, the money is short,” Akol told reporters in Juba.
He said local markets would soon run out of supplies, adding to the crisis that has erupted since the conflict began in Sudan on April 15, Xinhua news agency reported.
“We are seeing that the conflict in Sudan is not going to stop any time soon,” Akol said.
“We are reviewing the situation. We expect another 500,000 people to come by the end of the year.”
There are currently over 150,000 Sudanese refugees in South Sudan.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) recently appealed for $190.5 million to provide essential basic services to refugees. The appeal also includes relocating people displaced by the Sudan conflict to settlement areas.
Pieter van der Ouwert, acting humanitarian coordinator in South Sudan, said getting the refugees to their destinations is a major challenge.
