10 out of 11 who reached the finals were Indian
Among the 11 people who reached the finals of the 95th National Bee Competition, 10 were of Indian origin. Shradha Rachamreddy and Surya Kapu shared the third position with a prize money of $15,000. Shah participated in this competition for the third time. Earlier, he had joined in 2019 and 2021. This competition was not organized in 2020 due to Kovid. Parents looked very emotional on Shah’s victory. Mother said that Dev Shah had been working hard for this for four years. This competition was started in 2025.
Why did the Indians dominate this competition?
Children of Indian origin have dominated the spelling bee competition for two and a half decades, while the number of students of Indian origin in the US is less than 1%. Nevertheless, out of 300 children who qualify in this spelling competition every year, more than 20% are of Indian origin. Indian-origin students have been winning it continuously since 2008.
Secret of victory: First, Indian children are mainly educated through English medium. Second, the emphasis is on rote learning. Parents also emphasize on discipline along with quality education. Since, the winners of the spelling bee have been of Indian origin. So there is also the pressure of winning this competition every year.
Does the family also make preparations? It takes an entire family for the kids to win the spelling bee. For example- in the earlier times, to make a child of Gujarati origin win in the competition, his grandparents organized worship in India and fed him free food. One parent hired French, German, Italian teachers to teach words coming from other languages to English.
What’s the use? Critics ridicule the competition by calling it rote learning. At the same time, the winners say that the victory helped us to remain disciplined, to focus on an issue.
