A Sri Lankan court on Wednesday rejected former President Maithripala Sirisena’s plea to be discharged from all charges related to the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attack. About 270 people were killed in this attack. 108 relatives of those killed in the attack filed cases against the then President Sirisena for ignoring advance intelligence warnings.
On April 21, 2019, nine suicide bombers belonging to the local Islamic extremist group National Thowheed Jamaat (NTJ) linked to ISIS carried out a series of blasts at three Catholic churches and several luxury hotels, killing nearly 270 people, including 11 Indians, and injuring over 500. Were injured. The Colombo Appellate High Court on Wednesday dismissed Sirisena’s appeal. In January, a seven-member bench of the Supreme Court ordered Sirisena, 71, to pay 100 million Sri Lankan rupees as compensation to the next of kin of those killed in the 2019 Easter attacks.
It said top officials failed to act on detailed intelligence shared by India to avert the deadly suicide blasts. Sirisena was asked to pay the compensation within six months or face contempt of court charges. Later, he publicly stated that he is collecting money from his well-wishers to pay the amount in line with the order passed by the apex court.
