Sri Lanka: Police will interrogate Sirisena for his controversial remarks on Easter bomb blasts.

Colombo. Former Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena will face police questioning on Monday for his recent comments on the Easter suicide bombings in 2019. Sirisena had said he knew the perpetrators of the attacks that killed 270 people, including 11 Indians. Seventy-two-year-old Sirisena was the President of Sri Lanka from January 2015 to November 2019. He had previously denied any knowledge of the attacks.

Police chief Deshbandhu Tennakoon told reporters on Sunday that Sirisena’s statement would be recorded on Monday. The former president said in Kandy on Wednesday that he knew the perpetrators of the attacks. He said, I know who did it. Nine suicide bombers from the local Islamic extremist group National Tauheed Jamaat (NTJ), linked to ISIS, carried out a series of blasts in three churches and several luxury hotels in Sri Lanka on April 21, 2019.

However, the blasts, which occurred ahead of the 2019 presidential election, were the subject of a ‘conspiracy hypothesis’, with the Rajapaksa brothers then in the opposition believed to have taken political advantage of the attacks. Sirisena was charged and found guilty by a special committee. Later, he was ordered to pay Rs 10 crore as compensation to the relatives of the attack victims. He has paid only a part of it so far.
