The Sri Lankan Navy detained at least 32 Indian fishermen off the coast of Talaimannar and near Delft Island in the Northern Province for allegedly fishing in the island nation’s waters. It said the Navy seized two Indian trawlers with 7 fishermen near Talaimannar, naval personnel also seized three more Indian trawlers and 25 Indian fishermen near Delft Island.

It said the Navy has so far in 2024 apprehended 23 Indian trawlers and 178 Indian fishermen in island waters and handed them over to authorities for legal action. The issue of fishermen is a contentious issue in relations between India and Sri Lanka, with Sri Lankan Navy personnel even firing on Indian fishermen in the Palk Strait and several alleged incidents of them illegally entering Sri Lankan territorial waters. The boats were confiscated.
The Palk Strait, a narrow strip of water separating Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, is a rich fishing ground for fishermen from both countries. Fishermen from both countries are often arrested for unknowingly encroaching into each other’s territorial waters. In 2023, the island nation’s Navy arrested 240 Indian fishermen along with 35 trawlers for allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters.
