Sudan’s military ruler, Abdel Fattah Burhan, has written to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, requesting the removal of Volker Perthes, the Sudanese ambassador to the United Nations. Officials gave this information on Saturday. A spokesman for the UN chief said Guterres expressed “surprise” at the letter. Perthes has been a key mediator in Sudan. He played a key role in mediating efforts to restore democracy in the country and then fighting that broke out last month after tensions between the military rivals escalated. Fighting has broken out in Sudan between army chief Burhan’s troops and the Rapid Support Forces, a powerful paramilitary group led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
The UN Secretary-General received Burhan’s letter on Friday. UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric said, “The UN Secretary-General is shocked by the letter he has received. He is proud of the work done by Volker Perthes and has complete faith in him.” Dujarric did not reveal the contents of the letter. A Sudanese military official said Burhan’s letter requested Guterres to remove Perthes, who was appointed to the post in 2021. According to the official, Burhan accused Perthes of being biased, saying that his approach had fueled conflict in pre-war talks between generals and pro-democracy activists. The aim of those talks was to restore democracy in the country, which was derailed by the military coup in October 2021.
