At the 3rd Summit for Democracy, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar said that the introduction of electronic voting machines is a testament to our commitment towards transparency, efficiency and the sanctity of the democratic process. This shift is not only in line with the principles of modern democracy but also paves the way for greater civic participation, especially among the youth who will take up the responsibilities of our democratic legacy. India’s commitment to conducting free, fair and inclusive elections underlines the flexibility and adaptability of its democratic machinery.
S Jaishankar said this shows that even amidst complexities, the voice of every citizen matters. With 968 million registered voters, 15 million election officials and 1.2 million polling stations, the upcoming 18th edition of India’s national elections will be the largest election logistics exercise ever in the country.
What is Summit for Democracy?
The first summit was the fulfillment of one of Biden’s key campaign promises. It was the first gathering of more than 100 countries of its kind to help stem democratic decline and erosion of rights and freedoms around the world. It was held online due to COVID-19 restrictions. A second summit in 2022, co-hosted by the United States, Costa Rica, Zambia, the Netherlands, and South Korea, was also online.
