New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday slammed State Bank of India (SBI) for providing incomplete information and said the bank will have to provide unique number for each electoral bond that will disclose the political connection between the buyer and the recipient political party. Court issues ‘show cause’ notice to country’s largest bank for not disclosing unique alpha-numeric numbers in compliance with its directions and said SBI was ‘duty bound’ to disclose those numbers . A five-judge Constitution bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said the apex court, in its judgment on the electoral bond case, had directed disclosure of all details of the bonds, including buyer, amount and date of purchase.
The bench also includes Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justice BR Gavai, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra. The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday released the full list of entities that had purchased electoral bonds to make political donations. A day after the Commission made these figures public on its website, the Chief Justice said that SBI has to provide all the information. The bench issued notice to the bank and fixed March 18 for further hearing in the matter. The court was hearing the Election Commission’s plea seeking modification of a portion of the court’s March 11 order in the electoral bond case.
