Stockholm, March 08 (HS). Sweden was finally admitted into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) yesterday (Thursday). NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has said that ‘this is a historic day. Sweden will now have a rightful place in NATO and its views will also be taken into account in NATO policies and decisions. He said that ‘after remaining non-aligned for more than 200 years, Sweden will also now get the guarantee of security under Article 5.’
This was announced after a special meeting of the Swedish government yesterday. Now the Swedish flag will also start appearing outside the NATO headquarters in Brussels. US President Joe Biden welcomed this announcement on his ex-handle post and congratulated Sweden for this. According to Swedish newspaper The Local Sweden, Kristersson handed over Sweden’s accession document at a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. With this, more than 200 years of neutrality and non-alignment came to an end. The transfer took place at 5:25 pm Swedish time. Sweden will be the 32nd member country of NATO. On this occasion, Blinken said, “Good things come to those who wait. There is no better example than this.” He described it as “a historic moment”.
It is noteworthy that NATO was formed in 1949. At that time there were 12 countries including America, Britain, Canada and France. Now the number of member countries including Sweden has increased to 32. Initially the purpose of NATO was to stop the expansion of the Soviet Union. Everyone had resolved that an attack on any member of NATO would be considered an attack on all member countries. NATO has no army, but all member states can act unitedly in a crisis. NATO countries also conduct joint military exercises. The major member countries of NATO are America, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Albania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland.
