It is to be noted that last week the apex court in a pre-emptive strike had passed an order restraining the government from implementing the then Bill, but it nevertheless became law. Earlier, the National Assembly passed the Supreme Court (Practice and Procedure), Bill 2023, which aims to deprive the office of the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) of its powers to take suo motu cognizance in an individual capacity.
The bill was introduced by Federal Law and Justice Minister Azam Nazir Tarar. Addressing PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari termed the initiative as “too little and too late” and said it should be called the “Empowerment of Judges” Bill.
