tokyo (Uttam Hindu News): One person has died and several others have been hospitalized after taking Kobayashi Pharmaceuticals’ cholesterol-lowering red yeast rice pills in Japan. The company said on Tuesday that about 76 people have been admitted to the hospital after taking this medicine. These medicines are taken to reduce cholesterol. After this matter came to light, the company withdrew five of its products from the market last week.

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical has urged customers to stop using red yeast rice tablets and has launched an investigation into the matter. The company suspected that the problem was caused by toxins present in the fungus used in production. The company released a statement announcing a ‘link’ between its Red Yeast Cholesterol Help product and the patient’s death.

The company said it received a message from a bereaved family stating that their family member had died due to kidney failure. The man had been using red yeast rice medicine to reduce cholesterol for the last three years. The company said, we are thoroughly investigating the facts and causal relationships related to this matter.

Kobayashi said, our company has always prioritized the health of our customers above all else and we sincerely apologize for this situation. Affected customers reported symptoms such as change in urine color, swelling in their body parts, and fatigue. The company began investigating after a doctor alerted it to reported health problems in January.

Japanese media reported that the Red Yeast Cholesterol Help product hit the market in February 2021. The company has sold more than one million packets so far. The company supplies its product to food and beverage manufacturers around the world and last week warned them of the risks.
