Los Angeles: In the US, the death toll from the Maui forest fire in Hawaii province has increased to 114.
Officials gave this information on Saturday. The Maui Police Department confirmed in an update that the total death toll from Thursday’s wildfires was 111, rising to 114 on Friday. Hawaii Governor Josh Green said the death toll in the disaster was expected to rise.
The governor said, “It is difficult to put into words the scope of the devastation in Maui. More than 2,200 buildings have been destroyed by the massive fire. Now, we are engaged in the difficult task of locating survivors, reuniting separated families and identifying the remains of those we have lost.” According to the governor, about 470 search and rescue personnel and 40 sniffer dogs are now searching hundreds of burned buildings.
He said, “We will rebuild Lahaina. It will take years of work and billions of dollars, but we are committed to this effort and together we will rise to this challenge.” Green said the wildfire has gutted much of the historic town of Lahaina, a popular tourist destination on Maui and once the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii. It is home to about 13 thousand people.
He said he has ordered a comprehensive evaluation of every detail of the emergency response to the fires in Maui. About 1,000 people are still missing, local news outlet Hawaii News Now reported.
The White House said in a statement earlier this week that US President Joe Biden would visit Maui on Monday to meet with fire victims and local officials.
