The industry has welcomed the Gujarat government’s decision to allow serving and consumption of liquor in Gujarat’s ‘Gift City’, calling it progressive and bold. Various entrepreneurs say the move will attract major companies and quality workforce to the area. The state government on Friday lifted the ban on liquor in a bid to provide a ‘global environment’ to the Gujarat International Finance Tech (GIFT) City. Jaxay Shah, chairman and managing director (CMD) of Ahmedabad-based Sevi Group, which has 40 lakh sq ft of construction area in GIFT City, said, “This is a historic, progressive and bold step. GIFT City is competitive in terms of infrastructure and is at par or even ahead of many international financial cities in the world.
But now with this step improving social life, it will attract local youth towards MNCs.” Tejinder Oberoi, former chairman of Gesia, which is involved in the ICT (information and communication technology) industry in Gujarat, said the move will remove the excuse given by some IT companies for not investing in Gujarat. He said, “As a technology company, we understand that many companies were opposing coming to Gujarat mainly citing prohibition as the reason. His excuse for not coming to Gujarat has ended. So this is a big step forward.” Confederation of Indian Alcoholic Beverage Companies (CIABC) Director General Vinod Giri said the real significance of the move lies in the acknowledgment that alcohol is an essential part of relaxation and social engagement.
He said it sends a strong signal to the world that GIFT City is a modern and liberal place, ready to do business like other major global centres. CIABC is the apex body of the Indian alcoholic beverages industry. According to a statement issued by the Gujarat Prohibition Department on Friday, under the new system, hotels, restaurants and clubs (existing and those to be built) in GIFT City will be given permits for liquor and food facilities, but they will not be allowed to sell liquor bottles to the public. Will not be allowed.
