According to Gaza’s health ministry, more than 4,300 people have been killed in Gaza. This also includes the number of people killed in a hospital explosion. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, 90 Palestinians have died in the West Bank since the war began on October 7.
According to an Associated Press (AP) estimate, 197 Palestinians had been killed this year before the Hamas attack. In addition to the raids, Palestinians have been killed in anti-Israel protests and in some cases attacks on Jewish residents. Israel has said it has arrested more than 700 Palestinians since October 7, including 480 suspected Hamas members. The surge in violence follows more than a year of escalating raids and arrests in the West Bank and Palestinian attacks on Israelis. Israel captured Gaza and East Jerusalem as well as the West Bank in the 1967 war. Palestinians want all three areas for a future state.
More than 500,000 Israelis live in settlements in the West Bank, which most of the international community considers illegal, while more than 2.5 million Palestinians in the region live under Israeli military rule. Palestinians see settlements as the biggest obstacle to resolving the conflict with Israel. The last serious and substantive peace talks broke down a decade ago. The West Bank Protection Consortium says at least 470 Palestinians have been forcibly displaced due to violence in the West Bank since October 7. Apart from this, more than 1100 Palestinians have been displaced by the year 2022.
