Now there can be arrest
A day earlier, an anti-terrorism court of Pakistan on Wednesday rejected the bail of the country’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan for failing to attend the hearing of a case related to protests outside the Election Commission. After this decision, the possibility of Khan’s arrest has increased. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) activists protested last year after Khan was disqualified by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in a sanctioned funding case.
A case under anti-terror laws
In October last year, the police had initiated a case under anti-terror laws and the former prime minister was on interim bail in the case. On Wednesday, Judge Raja Jawad Abbas of the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Islamabad remarked that Khan was given enough time to appear before the court, but he failed to do so. On the other hand, Khan’s lawyer Babar Awan urged the court in his arguments that Khan be given a one-time exemption from personal appearance as Khan has not yet fully recovered after last year’s attack.
Khan ordered to appear
The judge refused to accept the plea and ordered Khan to appear saying that the court cannot grant any relief to a “powerful person” like Khan which is not granted to a common man. Ultimately, the judge refused to extend the interim bail, after which the 70-year-old Khan was at risk of being arrested by the police. At the same time, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) restrained a banking court from passing any direction on Khan’s bail plea in the Federal Investigation Agency’s case of banned financing against PTI.
register case as beneficiaries
Last year, the ECP had ruled in a funding case against PTI that the party had received prohibited funding. Later, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) registered a case against Khan and other party leaders as signatories/beneficiaries of the PTI account where the money was deposited.
