Guwahati: Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday said work is in progress on setting up a plant to make methanol from coal using indigenous technology. Inaugurating the trial run of Methanol Enriched Diesel (MD15) inland vessel in Brahmaputra river here, the Union Minister said that BHEL (Hyderabad and Trichy), Thermax and IIT Delhi are working on the project. Puri and Union Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Rameshwar Teli took a ride on the low-carbon ocean liner ‘SB Gangadhar’. It has seating for 50 people.
Puri said methanol is a cost-effective alternative marine fuel. It is less expensive than other marine fuels and economical in terms of infrastructure development such as onshore storage. Puri said in a program organized in connection with the preparations for Indian Energy Week-2023 that Assam Petrochemical Ltd. (APL) is currently producing about 100 TPD (tonnes per day) and is working on a new project to produce 500 TPD methanol. The event will be held in Bengaluru from February 6 to 8.
NITI Aayog’s ‘Methanol Economy’ program aims to reduce the country’s oil import bill, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and make methanol from coal reserves and municipal solid waste. The cost of conversion required for ships running on methanol is much lower than other alternative fuels. Also, the handling of methanol requires only minor modifications to the existing storage facility. Blending of 15% methanol in petrol can reduce the import of petrol/crude by at least 15%. Also, it can reduce green house gas emissions by up to 20 percent. India Energy Week-2023 is the first major event after India assumed the presidency of G-20.
