Unveiling a statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the apostle of peace, in this Japanese city, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the world still gets scared on hearing the word ‘Hiroshima’. Modi, who arrived in Japan for the G7 summit on Friday, made the remarks after unveiling a 42-inch bronze statue of Gandhi in Hiroshima. The bust site adjacent to the Motoyasu River is visited by thousands of people every day, locals and tourists alike. After unveiling the statue, he said that even today the world is horrified to hear the word Hiroshima. During my visit to Japan for the G7 Summit, I had the opportunity to unveil a bust of Mahatma Gandhi.

It is a great moment for me to know that the Bodhi tree that I gifted to the Japanese Prime Minister has been planted here in Hiroshima so that people can understand the importance of peace when they come here. I pay my respects to Mahatma Gandhi.
