The district and sessions court in Pakistan’s Bahawalpur city sentenced the accused to death after the prosecution presented evidence and witnesses against him, according to a court official.
A Pakistani court sentenced a Christian youth to death for allegedly blasphemy and also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on him. The accused has been identified as Nauman Masih (19), a resident of Islami Colony in Bahawalpur, about 400 km from Lahore. According to the police, he was arrested four years ago on the basis of a complaint that he had shared blasphemous material on a messaging app.

Blasphemy is a very sensitive issue in Pakistan. Unproven allegations can also incite mobs and violence. In many cases, the accused are lynched by the mob even before the legal proceedings begin. This year, on May 7, a man was lynched by a mob after he allegedly made blasphemous remarks during a rally of Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
