There is no alternative to IMF program to free Sri Lanka from economic recession: President Wickremesinghe
[ad_1]
Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe on Sunday said there is no option other than the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program to get the country out of the economic crisis. Last week, the IMF approved the release of the second tranche of US $ 337 million to Sri Lanka.
Responding to strong criticism from opposition parties opposed to the reforms, President Wickremesinghe said he chose the IMF program because it was the only available option. Wickremesinghe is also the Finance Minister.
“Those who make statements just to please people are not prepared to take necessary tough decisions,” he said. I chose the IMF program because it was the only option available.”
He said and urged all political parties to act responsibly by condemning the US$2.9 billion bailout. He said that tough decisions will have to be taken to correct the economic mistakes of the past. “Some people say they will renegotiate the IMF programme,” Wickremesinghe said. That’s a lie.
