The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday reserved its verdict on several petitions filed by the former prime minister against shifting the trial of Imran Khan (70) in the gift-trading case to a district court. Pronouncing the verdict, Chief Justice of the court Aamer Farooq also ordered the sessions court to hear the case afresh and decide whether the case was maintainable or not. Earlier, the Pakistan Supreme Court on Friday dismissed Imran Khan’s petition against the trial in a corruption case. In this, the former Prime Minister is accused of hiding the details of the gifts kept by him from the state treasury.
Imran is accused of abusing the post of Prime Minister between 2018 and 2022 and selling state gifts received during foreign trips, whose total value is more than 6.35 million US dollars. The apex court had on Wednesday rejected Khan’s request to stay the trial of the ongoing Toshakhana case in the Islamabad sessions court. However, it also granted relief to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief by adjourning further proceedings till Friday so that he can approach the court again in case any adverse order is passed by the Islamabad High Court (IHC). . The case is based on a criminal complaint filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) that Khan had deliberately concealed the details of the gifts kept by him from Toshakhana. A sessions court in Islamabad had last month ruled that the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) case against Khan was maintainable, which was challenged at the IHC. But the Islamabad High Court set aside a lower court ruling that had upheld the maintainability of the criminal trial against the former prime minister in the Toshakhana corruption case.
