Tragedy: 195 people died in a severe earthquake in Turkey, Syria

Ankara. A strong 7.8-magnitude earthquake shook southeastern Turkey and Syria early Monday, causing several buildings to collapse. At least 195 people have been reported killed in earthquake-related incidents. The death toll is expected to rise as rescue workers are still searching the affected areas for people trapped under the debris. People trapped inside partially collapsed buildings and people on the street were seen crying for help. The tremors were felt as far as Cairo. Its epicenter was north of the city of Gaziantep, about 90 km from the Syrian border. Atmeh town doctor Muhib Kaddour told The Associated Press by phone that at least 11 people had died in the quake.
“We fear hundreds of casualties,” Kaddour said. Hulusi Sahin, the governor of Turkey’s Malatya province, said at least 130 buildings had collapsed. At least 15 buildings collapsed in the city of Diyarbakir.
In northwest Syria, the opposition Syrian Civil Defense described the situation in the rebel-held area as “catastrophic”, saying many people were buried under the rubble of collapsing buildings. The ‘Syrian Civil Defense’ has asked people to stay in the open space outside the buildings. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was about 33 km from Gaziantep at a depth of 18 km. Its tremors were felt in the provinces. The earthquake occurred at a time when West Asia is in the grip of a snow storm which is expected to continue till Thursday. About 18,000 people were killed in a powerful earthquake in 1999 in northwestern Turkey.
