Dhaka. At least 43 people died and 22 others were injured in a fire that broke out in a seven-storey building in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka on Thursday night. Bangladesh Health Minister Dr. Samant Lal Sen gave this information on Friday. Sen told reporters here that the condition of those injured in the incident was “critical”. Fire service officials said that a fire broke out in a restaurant located on the first floor of the building at around 9.50 pm on Thursday, which quickly spread to the upper floors as well. There were restaurants and clothing shops on these floors. Officials said 75 people were evacuated from the building, of which 42 were unconscious. 13 fire brigade vehicles were sent to the spot.
Sen said, “33 people died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and 10 at (nearby) Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.” The minister said that 22 people in these two hospitals. People are being treated and the condition of these injured is “critical”. Sen, himself a doctor, told reporters at DMCH, “The respiratory system of those who survived has been seriously damaged.”
Doctors said that the bodies of some people were so badly burnt that it was difficult to identify them. He expressed fear that the death toll would increase. Eyewitnesses and officials said that after the fire, people ran towards the upper floors to escape and many people were taken out by the firefighters with the help of stairs.
