New York: At least 13 people were injured after a passenger train derailed in the US city of New York. A Long Island Rail Road train headed for Hempstead was rescued by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officer. Meanwhile, it derailed east of Jamaica Station at 175th Street and 95th Avenue in the city’s Queens borough at about 11:12 a.m. Thursday.
MTA President and CEO Janno Lieber said, “All eight cars of the train were derailed. Those who have been hurt have suffered injuries to their legs and back. The condition of none of them is serious. Video footage showed firefighters at the scene transferring passengers from the derailed train to a rescue train, which has a small platform connecting the two.
New York Governor Cathy Hochul said that “our top priority is to ensure that all passengers and railroad workers are safe and that train service can resume as soon as possible.” The reason for the derailment of the train was not immediately known. MTA officials said service disruptions were likely to continue through Friday morning.
