US Election: Former Indian-origin Governor of America Nikki Haley stopped her campaign for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination on Wednesday. He has taken this decision after his defeat in the party primaries of 15 states on ‘Super Tuesday’. With this decision of Haley, former President Donald Trump will remain the only major candidate in the race to get the presidential nomination from the Republican Party. In this way, current President Joe Biden will face Trump in the elections to be held in November.
Strong lead over Republican rival Haley
After the ‘Super Tuesday’ primaries, Trump took a strong lead over his only Republican opponent, Haley, who had deprived him of an absolute majority by winning in the state of Vermont. Former South Carolina Governor Haley said on Wednesday, “It’s time to stop my campaign.” She said that I want the voices of Americans to be heard. That’s what I did. I have no regrets. I will no longer be a candidate, but I will never stop using my voice for the things I believe in.
Haley may support Trump,
Haley, the former US Ambassador to the United Nations, emerged as Trump’s first strong rival when she announced her intention to run for president in February 2023. Haley has not made a final decision about whether she will support Trump or not. People close to Haley have different opinions. Some people believe that supporting Trump will be good for them because they will be seen as a team. Others strongly oppose supporting him.
During her campaign, Haley made history by becoming the first woman to win the Republican presidential primary. She is also the first Indian-American to win either the Democratic or Republican primary. The previous three other Indian-origin presidential candidates—Bobby Jindal in 2016, Kamala Harris in 2020, and Vivek Ramaswamy in 2024—had failed to win a single primary.
