Turkey Earthquake: Efforts to search and rescue people in the debris of the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey on February 6 have started moving towards their end. Turkey’s disaster management said that after the initial quake, some 6,040 aftershocks affected 11 provinces. The initial earthquake had a magnitude of 7.8, but it was followed nine hours later by a 7.5 magnitude tremor.
There were 40 tremors of five to six intensity
AFAD general manager Orhan Tatar said there were 40 aftershocks of five to six magnitudes, while the number of aftershocks of magnitude 6.6 was one. He warned about secondary disasters such as landslides and rock slides. In the investigation, more than one lakh buildings have been found badly damaged. An investigation by Turkey’s Ministry of Environment and Urbanization found 1,05,794 buildings destroyed or so badly damaged that they needed to be demolished.
