Turkey’s parliament approved Finland’s application to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) on Thursday, clearing the final hurdle for the Nordic country (Finland) to become part of the Western military alliance. All 276 lawmakers present in Turkey’s parliament voted unanimously in favor of Finland’s claim. A few days before this, the Hungarian Parliament also supported Finland’s inclusion in NATO. A year ago, alarmed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Finland and Sweden abandoned their decades-old policy of not joining NATO and applied to join the military alliance.
Significantly, the consent of all members is necessary for Finland and Sweden to join the 30-member NATO. Turkey and Hungary are the last two NATO members to agree to make Finland a part of this military alliance. Meanwhile, Sweden’s bid to join NATO remains on hold as Turkey and Hungary have yet to give the go-ahead.
