Ankara. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said he can still win the country’s presidential election but will respect the country’s decision if the election goes to a second round. Speaking to supporters in Ankara, Erdogan said the unofficial results of Sunday’s election were not yet clear, but claimed a “clear lead”. Erdoğan said on Monday morning, “We do not know yet whether the election will end in the first round itself. If our country decides to go for the second phase, it is also welcome.
He said that the votes of Turkish citizens living abroad have not yet been counted. Erdoğan, who has been in power for nearly two decades, faced a tough fight in Sunday’s election. The election focused primarily on domestic issues such as the economy, civil rights, and the February earthquake. If no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the votes, the top two candidates from the first round will have a decisive contest on May 28.
