Two foreign aid workers killed in Russian attack on Ukraine

Two foreign aid workers have reportedly been killed after a van carrying a team of four working with a non-governmental organization (NGO) in eastern Ukraine was hit by Russian shelling. Dozens of Russian drones targeted Kiev on Sunday, injuring a local civilian. Four volunteers from the NGO Road to Relief were trapped inside their van after it overturned and caught fire after being hit by shells near the town of Chasiv Yar, the organization said in a statement. These volunteers helped in evacuating the injured from war-affected areas.

Canadian Anthony Ihnat was killed in the attack, while German medical volunteer Ruben Mavik and Swedish volunteer Johan Matthias Thayer were seriously injured, the organization said on social media platform Instagram. Road to Relief said that nothing is yet known about the organization’s director, Emma Igual, who was in the van. Igual is a Spanish citizen. A few hours later, Spain’s acting Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Alberes told Spanish media that Madrid authorities had received verbal information that 32-year-old Igual was dead. Also on Sunday, ‘more than two dozen drones’ launched by Russia were shot down in Kiev in the early hours, the head of Kiev’s military administration said.

Debris from an Iran-made drone fell in several districts of the city and injured at least one civilian, who is safe, Serhiy Popko said in a Telegram post. He did not reveal the exact number of drones used in the attack and said that the Ukrainian Air Force will provide information in this regard later.Russia’s Defense Ministry said early Sunday that Moscow’s military had earlier destroyed three Ukrainian high-speed boats supplied by the US. These boats were going towards Crimea. However, this claim could not be independently verified.
