Ujjwala Scheme News: The Central Government has given a big gift to the common people before the festival. Ujjwala Scheme in the Union Cabinet meeting (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana – PMUY) 75 lakh new LPG connections have been approved. The central government has approved a subsidy of Rs 1,650 crore under the scheme. Earlier on August 30, in the cabinet meeting, the government had reduced the prices of LPG cylinders of 33 crore customers by Rs 200. After which, under the Ujjwala scheme, customers started getting Rs 400 per cylinder cheaper. Along with this, the government had announced to provide free gas cylinders to 75 lakh women. Under this, a subsidy of Rs 1,650 crore has been approved in the cabinet meeting today. Under the scheme, it has been announced to provide free gas cylinder and stove to women. On this announcement of the Central Government, just a day before Raksha Bandhan, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman says that this decision has been given as a gift to common women on Raksha Bandhan.
What will you get for free under the scheme?
Under the scheme, Rs 1650 crore will be given to OMC companies by the Central Government from the financial year 2023-24 to the financial year 2025-26. Under the Ujjwala scheme, the company will be given a subsidy of Rs 2200 per connection. First refill i.e. filling of empty cylinder and free stove, the expenses of which will be borne by the OMCs from the account of the Central Government. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur had told after the last cabinet meeting that the beneficiaries of Ujjwala scheme will now get LPG cylinder for Rs 703. Thakur said that the aim of this initiative is to provide relief to the families. With this, the government will provide new LPG connections to 75 lakh families under the Ujjwala scheme. With this, the number of beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will increase to 10.35 crore. In this regard, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the reduction in the prices of LPG will increase the convenience of women and their life will become even easier.
The cost will be Rs 7,680 crore in 2023-24
Anurag Thakur said that under the Ujjwala scheme, LPG subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder is being given to the customers, its cost will be Rs 7,680 crore in the current financial year 2023-24. Ujjwala beneficiaries are only 9.6 crore, while 33 crore consumers use LPG for cooking. The government had stopped giving subsidy on LPG in June 2020. The determination of the price of LPG across the country was market based. Due to this, the price of LPG cylinder in the national capital Delhi has become Rs 1,103, which will now be reduced by Rs 200. The only subsidy was being given to the beneficiaries of Ujjwala scheme. The government gives a subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder on filling 12 cylinders in a year. If the government itself bears the burden of price cut of Rs 200 instead of passing it on to the retail petroleum companies, it means that the subsidy system has been brought back.
