The International Criminal Court has increased the pressure on Russia. It issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova Belova on March 17, accusing them of abducting children from Ukraine.
Mykola Kuleba, the head of a Ukrainian rescue organisation, said it had brought back 31 children taken to Russia during the war. Kuleba gave this information at a press conference in Kiev on Saturday. He is the executive director of the organization ‘Save Ukraine’. Repatriation of Ukrainian children has been a major issue ever since Russia invaded Ukraine on 24 February 2022. The International Criminal Court has increased the pressure on Russia. It issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova Belova on March 17, accusing them of abducting children from Ukraine.
Jason Strazziuso, a spokesman for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), said this week that his organization was in contact with Belova “to restore contact and reunite separated families”. Belova told an informal meeting of the UN Security Council on Wednesday that the children had been taken for their safety, not abducted. However, the international community has rejected this claim. Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Nations, Sergei Kislitsya, said in a statement on Twitter on Wednesday that more than 19,500 children were taken from their families or orphanages and forcibly sent to Russia.
