Four plots dug two meters each of a cemetery in this Ukrainian city are meant for the burial of the country’s soldiers killed in the war with Russia, where the work of digging graves begins from the morning. Oleh Itsenko (29) and Andril Kuznetskov (23) start digging the graves at the break of dawn and continue till the sun goes down. Kuznetskov never thought that he would have to do this work. He has a Bachelor of Technology degree. He said that he had no work and was in dire need of money. Four soldiers will be buried today at the city’s main cemetery, some 400 km from Kiev.
Itsenko, who used to work in the metals business, said, “It is difficult. But someone has to do it.” Itsenko had to give up his work when the war started. He learns that diggers are needed at the local cemetery. He had no other option and he took up the job without thinking. Soldiers are handed over to soldiers in Ukraine on a daily basis and sometimes it has to be done several times a day. Officials estimate that at least 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed or wounded since Russia’s offensive began last year.
