Ukraine dispute should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy: Quad

Quad leaders on Saturday called for resolving the Ukraine conflict through dialogue and diplomacy, saying it should not be an era of war. This stand of the leaders echoes the stand of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi, US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and their Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese held talks on various global challenges, including the Ukraine conflict, at the annual Quad summit in Hiroshima.

Following the summit, the leaders issued a joint statement covering the Ukraine conflict, the situation in the East and South China Seas, and their vision for the Indo-Pacific region. The Quad leaders said they stand for the principles of the United Nations Charter, including the observance of international law, the peaceful resolution of disputes, and the territorial integrity and sovereignty of all states. In this context, the leaders said, today we express our deep concern over the ongoing war in Ukraine and we mourn its terrible and tragic humanitarian consequences.

“We recognize its serious implications for the global economic system, including food, fuel and energy security and critical supply chains,” he said. We will continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Ukraine. We remain committed to dialogue and diplomacy, knowing that ours must not be an age of war, the statement said. We support a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in line with the United Nations Charter. In this statement of the Quad leaders, there was an echo of Prime Minister Modi’s stand.

It is notable that Prime Minister Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin last year on the issue of Russia-Ukraine war, this is not the era of war. Modi was praised by world leaders for this comment. The Quad leaders also reaffirmed their firm commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific that is inclusive. “We want a region where no country is dominated and no country can be suppressed,” he said. The Quad leaders also expressed their commitment to strengthen cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.

Amid aggressive Chinese military activities in the region, the Quad leaders said, “We strongly oppose destabilization or unilateral activities that seek to forcibly change the status quo.” The leaders stressed the importance of abiding by international law. also stressed, particularly as reflected in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. He unequivocally condemned terrorism and violent extremism in all its forms and manifestations.
