UN Security Council again fails to reach consensus on Israel-Hamas war resolution

The United Nations Security Council again failed on Monday to agree on a resolution on the month-long Israel-Hamas war. Despite a closed-door discussion that lasted for more than two hours on Monday, differences persisted.
The US is calling for a “humanitarian ceasefire”, while many other council members are calling for a “humanitarian ceasefire” to allow much-needed aid to reach Gaza and save the lives of more civilians.
US Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood told reporters after the meeting, “We talked about a pause in the fighting to allow humanitarian aid to arrive, but there are disagreements within the council.”
Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told reporters on Monday that he wanted an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza and an end to the “escalating tensions” already occurring from the West Bank, Lebanon and Syria to Iraq and Yemen.
Guterres said international humanitarian law protecting civilians and the infrastructure essential to their survival was being clearly violated, adding that “no party in any armed conflict is above these laws.” ”
He also demanded the immediate, unconditional release of those taken hostage by Hamas during the October 7 attack on Israel. China, which takes over the presidency of the Security Council this month, and the United Arab Emirates, the representative of Arab countries on the council, called the meeting on Monday because of the “humanitarian crisis” in Gaza.
UAE Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh said all 15 council members are “fully engaged” in the talks and efforts will continue to reach consensus on a resolution and bridge differences.
