The UN Security Council on Monday passed a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. This resolution has been passed after more than five months of conflict between Israel and Hamas.
The fifteen-nation Security Council adopted the resolution submitted by the 10 non-permanent elected members. 14 countries voted in favor of the resolution, while the US abstained.
“The Security Council approved a long-awaited resolution on Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in a post on ‘X’ ”
“This resolution should be implemented,” he said. Not to do so would be inexcusable.” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas Greenfield said the resolution emphasizes that ”we must recommit to peace” during the month of Ramadan. Hamas can do this by accepting the agreement. The ceasefire can take effect immediately with the release of the hostages.
“And so, we must put pressure on Hamas to do the same,” he said. This is the only way to ensure a ceasefire and the release of hostages, as we have all called for today.”
Britain’s permanent ambassador to the United Nations, Barbara Woodward, said her country has long called for a permanent ceasefire to end the conflict immediately on humanitarian grounds. He also stressed the immediate release of those held hostage by Hamas.
