US announces new international mission to combat attacks on ships in the Red Sea

Many other countries, including the US, are preparing a new army to protect ships passing through the Red Sea that have been attacked by drones and ballistic missiles fired from Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced this in Bahrain on Tuesday. Due to the seriousness of the attack, many shipping companies have been ordered to stop their ships and not enter the Bab el-Mandeb Strait until the security situation is resolved.
Several ships have been attacked in the area in recent days. “This is an international challenge that demands collective action,” Defense Secretary Lloyd said in a statement.
Austin announced that Britain, Bahrain, Canada, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Seychelles and Spain would join the new mission. Some countries will conduct joint patrols while others will provide intelligence support in the southern Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
A defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said many other countries have also agreed to join the operation, but they do not want to announce it publicly.
The mission will be coordinated by the already existing Joint Task Force 153, which was established in April 2022 to improve maritime security in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb and the Gulf of Aden.
