US lawmakers, Indian Americans condemn attack on Indian consulate in San Francisco

Washington. US lawmakers and influential Indian Americans have condemned the attack on the Indian Consulate in San Francisco and demanded strict action against those involved in this “criminal act”. US lawmakers and influential Indian Americans also condemned the “violent rhetoric” against India’s Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu and said that freedom of speech is not a license to incite violence or damage property. Khalistan supporters made public on Twitter a video dated July 2 which shows the Indian consulate in San Francisco being set ablaze.

In this video, sentences like “Violence begets violence” are written. It also featured news related to the death of Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) chief Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada. Nijjar was one of India’s most wanted terrorists and carried a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh. Last month, he was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Canada. MPs Ro Khanna and Michael Waltz said in a joint statement that violence at diplomatic establishments will not be tolerated.

He said, “We, as co-chairs of the ‘India Caucus’, strongly condemn the incident of arson and vandalism at the Indian Consulate in San Francisco and the posters circulating on social media, including Indian Ambassador Taranjit Sandhu.” Venom is being spewed against Indian diplomats.“We support the right of every American to freedom of speech and expression, but this is not a license to damage property or incite violence,” the lawmakers said in a joint statement. Violence against diplomatic establishments is a crime and will not be tolerated at all. We urge the Ministry of External Affairs to coordinate with law enforcement in investigating the damage at the Indian Consulate and hold those involved accountable.
