suvah An undersea volcano erupted in the South Pacific island nation of Vanuatu on Wednesday, sending ash and smoke billowing everywhere in the surrounding area. Vanuatu lies in the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire’, where tectonic plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
An undersea volcano six km east of Vanuatu’s Apé Island began erupting on Wednesday morning, sending plumes of ash into the sky, according to Radio New Zealand. Reports quoted Ricardo Williams, a senior volcanologist with Vanuatu’s Department of Meteorology and Geo-Hazards, as saying the volcano had been shaking and spewing steam repeatedly since the early hours of Wednesday.
He told that the ash released from the volcanic eruption up to a height of about 100 km has fallen around the volcano. Vanuatu officials have placed the volcano alert at level one on a scale of one to five. The aviation industry has been advised to stay away from the east of the Ap Island area and maritime activities have also been suspended in the area. A monitoring alert has also been issued for other islands around the island of Apee in the Shefa province of Vanuatu. The volcano is one of a series of active underwater volcanic cones and a caldera that last erupted in 2004.
