Chennai: In India, vegetarian food is proving to be expensive and non-veg food is proving to be cheap. CRISIL Market Intelligence and Analytics said that the price of vegetarian thali increased by 7 percent this year (in February) compared to February last year, while the price of non-veg thali declined by 9 percent.
According to CRISIL report, in February this year, the price of vegetarian thali became Rs 27.50, whereas in February 2023, it was Rs 25.6. At the same time, the non-vegetarian thali was Rs 59.2 in February 2023, which has now reduced to Rs 54.
The cost of the vegetarian thali increased due to a 29 and 38 percent year-on-year increase in onion and tomato prices, respectively. Apart from this, rice and pulses also became expensive.
According to the report, the decline in the price of non-veg thali was due to a nearly 20 per cent year-on-year decline in broiler chicken prices. It has 50 percent weightage in the total value. This has been the main reason for the price of non-vegetarian thali decreasing on an annual basis.
According to the report, broiler prices have increased by 10 percent in February due to the outbreak of bird flu in Andhra Pradesh affecting supply and increasing demand ahead of the holy month of Ramzan. However, it was mixed news for vegetarians and non-vegetarians when we compared the cost per plate in January and February this year.
According to the report, the price of vegetarian thali declined by 2 percent to Rs 26 in January 2024. At the same time, in January 2024, the price of non-veg thali was Rs 52 with an increase of 4 percent.
