Violent clashes again in Sudan’s capital after relative calm

Khartoum (Best Hindu News): After a few days of relative calm, violent clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) have resumed in the capital Khartoum. According to witnesses, fierce fighting broke out on Wednesday around Khartoum and the Al-Halfaya bridge that links the capital’s neighboring towns of Bahri and Omdurman.

Video footage obtained by Xinhua news agency showed the army conducting intense aerial bombardments against RSF military posts north of Bahri and deploying army convoys on main roads.

The SAF confirmed in a statement that it carried out an extensive search operation in Bahri. It said the operation resulted in the deaths of hundreds of rebel militia members, destroyed dozens of armored vehicles and eliminated several enemy positions in the area.

According to the statement, the armed forces successfully ambushed a group of rebel militias south of Bahri, destroying seven armed vehicles and seizing six others.

The army called on citizens to avoid conflict areas, stay indoors and take necessary precautions for their own safety.

In response, the RSF published video clips showing their actions in response to an army attack on their bases in Bahri.

It claimed to have shot down two army aircraft in Bahri and seized military vehicles that the RSF said belonged to the army.

The Khartoum State Security Committee has decided to submit immediate recommendations to SAF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, including declaring a state of emergency, curfews and general mobilization, in addition to taking immediate measures to deal with the shortage of food and services Is.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has estimated that more than seven million people are now displaced within the war-torn country’s territory since violence first broke out on April 15. UN figures have shown that at least a million Sudanese have fled to neighboring countries for safety.

At least 550 people have been killed and nearly 5,000 others injured in these clashes, according to the latest figures provided by the country’s health ministry in early May.

Talks between the two warring sides are currently underway in the Saudi city of Jeddah to end the conflict and open a humanitarian route for aid delivery and evacuation from the war-torn country, with little progress so far.
