Moscow: Russian President Vladimir Putin said after a landslide election victory that Moscow will not back down from its aggression in Ukraine and plans to create a ‘buffer zone’ to protect Ukraine from long-range and cross-border attacks. Russia’s military has made progress in the war against Ukraine but that progress has been slow and has proven costly. Ukraine has used its long-range weapons to target oil refineries and depots in Russia. A group of Kremlin rivals based in Ukraine has also launched cross-border attacks.
Putin said, ‘If necessary, we will consider creating some safe zones on the territories controlled by the Ukrainian government.’ Putin said that entering this ‘safe zone’ (buffer zone) would be possible using foreign weapons available with the enemy. It will be difficult. Russia’s Central Election Commission said on Monday that Vladimir Putin has won the country’s presidential election and has secured a fifth presidential term with a record vote percentage. Putin once again warned Western countries against deploying military forces in Ukraine. He warned that a potential conflict between Russia and NATO would put the world just “one step away” from World War Three.
It is noteworthy that French President Emmanuel Macron had recently said that the possibility of sending Western troops to Ukraine cannot be ruled out. On the prospects of peace talks with Kiev, Putin reiterated that Russia is ready for talks but will not fall into the trap of a ceasefire that would allow Ukraine to rearm.
