Representatives of the governments of Arab countries voted on Sunday to bring Syria back into the Arab League after a 12-year suspension. Days before the vote in Egypt’s capital Cairo, top local diplomats met in Jordan to discuss a roadmap for bringing Syria back into the Arab League as the conflict continues to ease. The Arab League summit is scheduled to be held on May 19, hosted by Saudi Arabia. The decision to withdraw Syria also comes as part of ongoing dialogue with Arab governments to reach a political solution to the crisis in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
The Arab League has set up a communications committee to monitor developments in Saudi Arabia and Syria’s neighboring countries of Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq. There is no consensus among Arab countries on normalizing relations with Syria. The governments of many countries did not participate in this meeting, including Qatar. Qatar continues to support opposition groups against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Syria’s membership in the Arab League was suspended 12 years ago after the rebellion turned into a conflict. Nearly half a million people have been killed so far in the conflict that began in March 2011.
