Ankara. Voting began on Sunday in key parliamentary and presidential elections in Turkey. The election is expected to be a tough contest and could become the biggest challenge for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in his two decades in office. The vote could either see Erdoğan stay in office for another five years or head the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) country down what major opposition parties call a more democratic path. It would be the first time in 20 years in office for Erdoğan, 69, that opinion polls have indicated he is trailing his rivals.
Opinion polls suggest a slight lead for 74-year-old Kemal Kilikdaroglu, leader of the centre-left, pro-secular Republican People’s Party and joint candidate of the United Opposition Alliance. If no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two candidates in the first round will have a decisive contest on May 28. More than 6.4 crore voters including 34 lakh people settled abroad will be eligible to vote in this election.
