Sophia. Bulgaria goes to the polls on Sunday for the fifth time in two years in a general election going through a period of political instability. It is expected that this will end the political instability here and help in overcoming the economic troubles caused by the war in Ukraine. The polling began in the morning and will continue till evening and the initial results are expected by Monday. However, voter turnout is expected to be low due to public apathy, as people are disillusioned with politicians who have repeatedly failed to run coalition governments.

On Sunday, threats were made to bomb the schools being used as polling stations. According to cyber security experts, hacker groups possibly linked to Russia have made these threats and their purpose is to spread panic so that the least number of people leave their homes to vote. New polls suggest that the political impasse is not likely to end any time soon. The election is contested between three-time Prime Minister Boyko Borisov’s GERB and Kirill Petkov’s We Continue the Change party, which recently formed a coalition government with the right-wing Democratic Bulgaria.
