Voting delayed again in United Nations on proposal to send aid to Gaza

United Nations. The UN Security Council was again delayed on Thursday in voting on an amended resolution to send urgent aid to Gaza. The US has supported amendments to the resolution, while other countries have backed a tougher resolution that includes a call for an immediate end to hostilities between Israel and Hamas.
However it has now been removed. Council members held closed-door discussions for about an hour on the revised draft proposal. Because of the significant changes, many members said they needed to consult their government before voting. Now voting on this is likely to be held on Friday. US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield told reporters after the discussion that the US supports the new text and would support it if it were put to a vote.
This new draft proposal has been prepared after high-level talks between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and his counterparts from Arab and Western countries. Thomas-Greenfield denied that the proposal had been weakened. “The draft resolution is a very strong proposal, fully supported by the Arab Group, which provides what they need to get humanitarian assistance on the ground,” he said.
A key provision removed from the resolution included a call for “an immediate cessation of hostilities to ensure the safe and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian assistance and to take immediate steps toward a permanent cessation of hostilities.” Thomas-Greenfield said the US has negotiated a new proposal with the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, which borders Gaza. The resolution is sponsored by Arab countries represented by the United Arab Emirates.
