The question is, what is Wagner Group doing in Africa? Its main objective is to earn money. It has tacit approval from the Kremlin and has also promoted Russia’s diplomatic and economic interests. When the Wagner Group agreed to help the new military regime in the fight against Islamic terrorists following the withdrawal of French forces from Mali in 2021, it was a ‘boon’ for Russia. Wagner recently shared a timeline on Telegram that shows the group’s official involvement in Africa began in 2018. First it sent its ‘military instructors’ to CAR and Sudan and then moved to Libya the next year.
Prigozhin eyes gold and oil
These countries have such natural resources that Russia and Prigozhin have their eyes on. The CAR, which has been unstable for decades, is rich in diamonds, gold, oil and uranium. Wagner helped President Faustin-Archangel Toudera, whose bodyguards were also mercenaries, remove French influence in exchange for resources. Julia Stanyard of the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime told the BBC: “Over the past two to three years, Wagner’s strategy has been to expand his military and economic empire in Africa.”
Wagner Group makes vodka and beer
The think tank analyst says Wagner has a network of associated companies. They are doing business in countries where fighters of the group are present. In the CAR, they reportedly trade in conflict minerals and timber, as well as making beer and vodka. Wagner’s interest in Mali may have been linked to its gold deposits. However, so far there is no evidence of its firm working there.
