United Nations . India has underlined the need for a reconstituted United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that better reflects the geographical and developmental diversity of today’s United Nations. At the same time, India emphasized that most of the UN members support the call for increasing the number of permanent seats in the powerful UNSC.

India has been demanding reforms in the United Nations, especially leading the ‘Global South’. It has also been at the forefront in demanding a place as a permanent member in the 15-member United Nations Security Council. India’s Permanent Envoy to the UN Ruchira Kamboj on Monday said, “India is in favor of expansion of the membership of the UN Security Council in both permanent and non-permanent categories as this is the only way to achieve real reforms in the Security Council.” ”

Addressing a meeting of the Intergovernmental Dialogue (IGN) on Security Council reform, Kamboj underlined the need for “a reconstituted Security Council” that better reflects the geographic and developmental diversity of today’s United Nations. He said, “A Security Council where the voices of developing countries and unrepresented regions, including Africa, Latin America and Asia, can also get a fair platform, and for this the expansion of the Council in both categories of membership is extremely important.” ”The current UNSC consists of five permanent members – the US, Britain, China, France and Russia – and 10 non-permanent members.
