Warm climate and groundwater exploitation

Dr. Prabhjot, Principal Scientist of Agrometrology, Punjab Agricultural University, has warned people that climate change is happening rapidly. If we don’t change now, the weather will change us. He said that in the last 40 to 50 years, the minimum average temperature of Punjab has increased by one degree. Due to this, many changes are being seen in the weather. When the monsoon of last 20 years in Punjab was analyzed, it was found that only in two-three years in the monsoon life, the rainfall was average or slightly above average. In other years there has been less than average rainfall. This is worrying because rain is needed for crops in Punjab. If the rainfall continues to reduce like this then a big problem may arise. He said that due to pollution the temperature can also increase and the sunlight reaching the earth is also decreasing very slowly.

The hot climate and lack of monsoon rains means that groundwater exploitation in Punjab will be high, as the crops grown in Punjab, including wheat and paddy, sugarcane all require large amounts of water. When rainfall decreases due to changes in weather, dependence on groundwater will increase.
The groundwater level in Punjab has already fallen. If fundamental changes are not brought in the crop cycle, Punjab will face groundwater crisis in the near future and it is possible that Punjab will have to face a situation like Rajasthan in terms of water. The need of the hour is that the government and farmer organizations should together seriously consider the crisis arising due to changing weather and lack of rain in monsoon.
