In an event organized on Wednesday on the ‘International Year of Glacier Preservation’, Guterres said, “Glaciers are essential for life on Earth.” Glaciers cover 10 percent of the world. Glaciers are also a major source of water for the world.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned that glacier retreat due to global warming could reduce water flow in major Himalayan rivers such as the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra, which are vital to India, in the coming decades. In an event organized on Wednesday on the ‘International Year of Glacier Preservation’, Guterres said, “Glaciers are essential for life on Earth.” Glaciers cover 10 percent of the world. Glaciers are also a major source of water for the world.” Guterres expressed concern that human activities are driving the planet’s temperature to dangerous new levels and that “melting glaciers are extremely dangerous.”

Antarctica is losing an average of 150 billion tons of ice each year, while Greenland’s ice is melting even faster. There 270 billion tons of ice is melting every year. 10 major rivers of Asia originate in the Himalayan region, supplying water to the 1.3 billion people living in its watershed. “As glaciers and ice sheets recede in the coming decades, major Himalayan rivers such as the Indus, the Ganges and the Brahmaputra will see an impact and their water flow will decrease,” Guterres said.

He said that the world has already seen how the flood situation in Pakistan has worsened due to melting snow on the Himalayas. At the same time, rising sea levels and the entry of salt water will destroy large parts of these huge ‘deltas’. The event was organized on the sidelines of the United Nations 2023 Water Conference. The Water Conference formally launched a mid-term review of the work to be done in the United Nations Decade for Action on Water and Sanitation (2018-2028). This conference is still going on at the United Nations Headquarters. Tajikistan and the Netherlands are hosting it. Whatever comes out of the conference, which runs from March 22 to 24, will be included in the 2023 session of the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.
