The United Nations has long been committed to addressing the global water crisis caused by increasing demand for water resources to meet people’s water needs for daily living, commercial use and agriculture. On 18 January 1993, the 47th United Nations General Assembly resolved to designate 22 March of every year as “World Water Day”.
Water is a vital natural resource and environmental element on which all our lives depend and is indispensable and irreplaceable for social and economic development. Although the Earth’s water reserves are vast, sea water accounts for 97.2 percent of it, and terrestrial freshwater accounts for only 2.8 percent. What is even more worrying is that this extremely limited amount of fresh water is becoming increasingly polluted.
The rapid development of population growth, industrial and agricultural production activities, and urbanization in modern society has had a huge impact on the limited water resources and water environment. Globally, water pollution, rapid increase in water demand and competitive development among departments have led to further depletion of water resources due to irrational use. The water environment is deteriorating, seriously affecting social and economic development. Which is directly affecting our lives.
According to scientists, drinking water crisis has arisen in more than half of the countries and regions of the world. Protecting water resources and using them more effectively and rationally, especially in third world countries, is a major challenge for governments around the world. In such a situation, the need of the hour says that we should increase awareness about water crisis, conserve water, save water and protect water resources.
World Water Day is about saving water resources around the world. March 22, 2024 is the 32nd “World Water Day” with the theme “Water for Peace”.
